This past weekend the gym at Parry Sound High School was filled with excitement as 180 athletes from teams across Ontario competed in the 30th Annual Ontario Rope Skipping Championship.
The two day event featured team events on Saturday, individual speed and power trials on Sunday morning, and freestyle trials on Sunday afternoon.
When we were approached about capturing some images of the championship we quickly agreed as we feel it’s important to contribute and to give back to the local community whenever possible. With other commitments on Saturday and part of Sunday, we were only able to attend the freestyle competitions for part of Sunday afternoon, but that was sufficient to realize just how different competitive jumping rope skipping was from childhood recollections of school yard skipping. The speed, stamina and gymnastic skills of the competitors we saw in action during the freestyles were nothing short of remarkable.
Parry Sound is fortunate to have two rope skipping teams, the SOAR Rope Skipping Team and the Georgian Jumpers, and both competed in this year’s event. At a provincial level the sport is headed up by the Ontario Rope Skipping Association. If you are looking for a sport that will keep you and your children in tip top condition you should check out competitive rope skipping.
